IAB, together with Marin Lercher,
develops the “cabrio” as one of the Master projects at ETH Zurich
within the Gramazio Kohler Research professorship.
No conventional plans are produced.
Only Grasshopper — visual programming for Rhino — is allowed;
every component is scripted and parametrically defined.
The project transforms the chaotic parking lot at Obere Letten
into a controlled yet flexible urban stage.
A compact structure unfolds
through an extendable roof
that creates shelter
and significantly reduces noise,
turning concerts and gatherings
into contained events rather than disturbances.
Distributed micro-speakers integrated into the structure
allow music to spread evenly across the site without high peak volumes
— atmosphere without acoustic aggression.
Benches and tables detach to become climbing walls or spatial dividers;
concealed storage forms the infrastructural backbone.
A scissor-like wooden roof structure,
stabilized with steel cables and a tensioned membrane with parametric cutouts,
enables continuous spatial transformation.
The project positions architecture as a mediator between urban intensity
and residential calm — and is very well received by the critics.
